TYPE
Residential Prewar Apartment

This sunlit Park Avenue apartment began life as a pied-à-terre for a professional couple with grown children. Previously living in the Berkshires, they wanted to bring the lived-in nature of the country to the formality of this Pre-War Co-op.

The result takes the apartment’s traditional layout and tempers it with the trappings of modern living. Layouts are organic and multi-faceted, as rooms serve more than a single purpose. Furnishings—both old and new—feel as though they’ve accumulated over a lifetime. While textures and finishings embrace the couple’s dualities.

With three grown children with families of their own, the couple often has company, so in the living room, there needed to be sufficient seating. xxx and xxx are paired with a sofa and chaise longue, while a generous xxx coffee table and multiple side tables provide spaces for plates and platters.

The couple wanted each room to serve more than one function. Here, in the study, a xxx desk and xxx chair, provide a place to work, and a sofa in boucle wool transforms into a bed for those in need of a place to spend the night. The room’s many textures are balanced by the high gloss of the paneled walls.

Through a mixture of pieces, with varying styles and varying purposes, the formality of the dining room is toned down, making it another comfortable place to work and, of course, a place to eat. xxx dining chairs and a substantial xxx dining table, sit in front of Perriand-inspired shelves that house art, books, and objects accumulated over a lifetime.
