The ambition for this well-appointed new build was to give it some character. It had good bones, including herringbone floors and a solid Smallbone kitchen, and great views—panoramic, really—but lacked the personality of the owner’s country house in Washington, Connecticut.

Through a considered mixture of American mid-century furniture, chosen for its human proportions, and a strict, graphic color palette of neutrals and rust, a casual yet elegant home was created, one well suited to entertaining.

Here, in the living room, Scandinavian teak armchairs and a B&B Italia chaise lounge (both in ivory wool) sit beside a Noguchi floor lamp, a custom sofa in caramel mohair, and a walnut coffee table. A mix of cool and warm textures akin to the materiality of the city framed by the expansive windows.

The den was originally intended as an additional bedroom, which always felt out of place off the dining room. So, we opened the doorway and clad the walls in olive suede and walnut to create a refined, cocooning space that is both functional for work and relaxing.

Sometimes a scheme can surprise both you and the client. Take this Muse wallpaper by Faye Toogood for Calico wallpapers, which inspired the color palette for the condo. When the couple saw a sample of it, they fell in love with it, and all adherence to understated neutrality went out the window—in the powder room, at least.
